BROCHURE EXAMPLES
CONTRAST: I like that the white background makes the text pop. It also works well with the black images of the people.
REPETITION: I noticed that there is a lot of repetition of bullet points. I don't really like that the brochure does that, because I think that the bullet points should help outline important information. If the whole brochure consists of bullet points, then it appears too cluttered because the repetition makes people lose interest in the information of the brochure.
ALIGNMENT: This brochure has good alignment with everything expect for the resources being left aligned. This helps the resources to stand out from the rest of the brochure.
PROXIMITY: The brochure is well organized. All of the information is put together with related information. The sparse use of boxes help draw the attention of the audience to them.
PURPOSE: Inform the audience about sexual misconduct prevention.
AUDIENCE: College students.
GENRE: Brochure.
ENGAGEMENT: To inform the college population about sexual misconduct, and to help prevent sexual misconduct on campus.
CONTRAST: There is good contrast in this brochure, with all the colors. The colors and the images inside the brochure seem to frame the text, helping to guide the readers attention to the text.
REPETITION: The bold blue headers contribute to the repetition of the brochure. One criticism of the brochure is that the first fold of the brochure has a different font size than the other two folds. This is a little distracting, because the reader's attention wanders to the larger text.
ALIGNMENT: There is good alignment, as the text flows in the brochure in general. Bullet points are not too overused, and the indentation used helps to guide the reader to the next bit of information.
PROXIMITY: The color and the images above the text help to separate the info into distinct categories.
PURPOSE: To help students get and retain info from their reading assignments.
AUDIENCE: College Students. Could also apply to students in general.
GENRE: Brochure.
ENGAGEMENT: The ability to help students succeed and excel in their studies.
CONTRAST: This brochure and the brochure on "Reading a Textbook" are similar because they were both printed by the same organization. This brochure also has good use of images and color to help guide the reader to the information.
REPETITION: The color blue tells the reader the different sections of information in the brochure.
ALIGNMENT: This brochure mostly breaks up the information with small paragraphs. It only uses bullet points in one section, which helps that section stand out to the reader. Everything is pleasantly left aligned, except for the section headers.
PROXIMITY: The different sections of the brochure are clearly presented under the headers. Again, the images and the colors help guide the reader to the text.
PURPOSE: To help college freshman get acquainted to the college workload and college expectations.
AUDIENCE: College freshman.
GENRE: Brochure.
ENGAGEMENT: Hopefully to help incoming freshman get acquainted with their new surroundings.
EXAMINATION/CRITERIA
CONTRAST: I used the school colors of maroon and gold to help contrast the text.
REPETITION: I used bullet points for repetition, trying to list as much important information as possible.
ALIGNMENT: I used left alignment for all of my information to have consistency across my the brochure. I indented the information underneath the headers to help guide the reader through the info.
PROXIMITY: I used headers and pictures to split up all the information into chunks. The fictional quote inside the brochure also helps to separate two sections.
PURPOSE: To introduce and inform incoming college freshman of the benefits and activities that religious organizations on campus offer.
AUDIENCE: Incoming college freshman.
GENRE: Brochure.
ENGAGEMENT: To help increase the membership of on campus religious organizations with incoming freshman. Also to help incoming freshman feel more at home in a new environment.
COVER LETTER EXAMPLES
CONTRAST: Black text on white background.
REPETITION: There is good repetition of content, such as naming good attributes of the author.
ALIGNMENT: The bulk of the letter is left aligned, while the address of the author is right aligned. This helps the author's address stand out to the reader.
PROXIMITY: The body of the letter is split up mostly evenly into paragraphs, to spread the ideas of the author into different sections. The name of the author is separated from the rest of the letter by a line, which helps it stand out to the reader.
PURPOSE: Applying for a job.
AUDIENCE: Potential employer.
GENRE: Cover letter.
ENGAGEMENT: Maybe a job.
CONTRAST: Black text on white background.
REPETITION: Information of the author's positive qualifications.
ALIGNMENT: Everything is nicely aligned. The author's address is also split off from the rest of the letter to help stand out to readers.
PROXIMITY: The bullet points help attract the reader's attention to this important info.
PURPOSE: Applying for a job.
AUDIENCE: Potential employer.
GENRE: Cover letter.
ENGAGEMENT: Hopefully a job.
CONTRAST: Black text on white background.
REPETITION: Again, repeats positive attributes of author.
ALIGNMENT: The main body of the paragraph is separated from the address of the recipient and the information of the author.
PROXIMITY: The bullet points help to break up the monotony of the cover letter, attracting the reader's attention.
PURPOSE: Applying for a job.
AUDIENCE: Potential employer.
GENRE: Cover letter.
ENGAGEMENT: Maybe a job.
EXAMINATION/CRITERIA
CONTRAST: Black text on white background.
REPETITION: I used the same repetition as in the examples. I tried to list many good qualifications for myself.
ALIGNMENT: Everything except for my contact address is left aligned. I also made my name larger and bold to draw the reader's attention. This might help them remember my cover letter better.
PROXIMITY: I split my content into paragraphs. I had originally done this did this because I thought that bullet points were unprofessional. I now know that this is not the case, but I still chose to keep my cover letter the way it is because I feel that I formatted the information thoughtfully.
PURPOSE: Applying for a job.
AUDIENCE: Potential employer.
GENRE: Cover letter.
ENGAGEMENT: Hopefully a job. Also gain experience writing cover letters for future projects.
SATIRE EXAMPLES
*CONTRAST: The picture and the text contrast well against the white background. I liked how the image contrasts the conventional idea of the "food pyramid", by making it out to be a pile of unhealthy foods.
REPETITION: I don't believe this satire uses repetition in its presentation.
ALIGNMENT: The text has good alignment, being placed right beside the image so as to not seem too cluttered by being superimposed on it.
PROXIMITY: There is good proximity in that most of the content is placed near the center of the image.
PURPOSE: To inform the public of the current predicament of the American food system.
AUDIENCE: Conscientious consumers.
GENRE: Satire.
ENGAGEMENT: Help to inform the public by presenting information in a comical way that hold's the reader's attention and makes them think.
CONTRAST: I believe this satire has a metaphorical contrast. It made me ask the question, "what does it mean to be unique?". Even though the image is of forks, I immediately applied the message to people. I've heard adults say that it is good to be unique, but this satire asks if being unique makes an individual useful. I don't find this satire humorous, but it definitely does succeed in making fun of a popular concept.
REPETITION: The forks are all in the same position except for one. The fact that it is different immediately draws the attention of the reader to the unique fork.
ALIGNMENT: The fact that the text is aligned towards the middle helps guide the reader's attention down the image efficiently.
PROXIMITY: Everything is close to the middle.
PURPOSE: To make fun of a popular concept and to make readers think about its message.
AUDIENCE: The general public.
GENRE: Satire.
ENGAGEMENT: To get the reader to think about the message, and maybe get them to start asking questions.
CONTRAST: The simple black and "white" of the image help the reader to be able to see the cartoons and the text pretty well.
REPETITION: The father uses the repetition of the concept "organized crime" in his dialog. This indicates that the father perceives the government as another criminal organization.
ALIGNMENT: The cartoon does not really use alignment, as it is hand drawn. Really, the only concept of alignment might be in the text being at the top of the panel, and the cartoons being near the bottom.
PROXIMITY: The text being on top of the white background is good proximity, because that background is being used as a sort of "speech bubble".
PURPOSE: To make fun of the public sentiment toward the government.
AUDIENCE: Politically knowledgeable individuals.
GENRE: Political satire.
ENGAGEMENT: To put a smile on the reader's face, and to have them think about what they really think of the government.
EXAMINATION/CRITERIA
CONTRAST: I thought that the pink and the large bold text on the white background would help me grab the reader's attention. I also made the text on the yellow portion white because I thought that would look good. I chose bright pink and yellow because of the theme of the "DDR Club". When I think of this game I get mental images of bright neon colors, flashing lights, and thumping loud music. I thought the colors would help convey to the reader a sense of what the game is.
REPETITION: I used repetition of using short phrases inside the yellow portion to help guide the reader's attention down that section.
ALIGNMENT: I used left alignment for the black text. I tried to line up that text with the image on the flyer. I also tried to make all the text in the yellow portion consistent.
PROXIMITY: I put the information separate from the benefits of going to the club. The yellow portion also helped me separate information so that there wasn't too much clutter.
PURPOSE: Inform people about this exciting club and to maybe persuade them to come to club meetings.
AUDIENCE: College students.
GENRE: Club flyer satire.
ENGAGEMENT: To inform students about an exciting new club on campus.
